Na jarenlang zoeken naar een business model komen ze met… advertenties.

Mijn mening is: Flop. Een stap terug in de tijd. Het maakt de service minder waardevol. Ik zal uitleggen waarom:

Wat maakt Twitter waardevol?

Twitter is volledig opt-in. Een normaal bericht komt niet aan bij anderen, tenzij de ander dat toelaat. Dit concept is heel simpel, maar heeft bijkans gezorgd voor een soort omslag in de marketing-traditie.

• Oude versus Nieuwe media
• Broadcast versus Social / Conversatie
• Push versus Pull

Dus, wat maakt Twitter waardevol? Power to the people. Je bepaalt zelf hoe je het gebruikt, wie je toelaat, met wie je relaties aangaat.
Je kan mensen volgen, ontvolgen, en blokkeren. Je kan zelfs per gebruiker de retweets uitzetten. Ideaal!

Wat maakt Twitter minder waardevol?

Spam. Gevolgd worden door halfnaakte Britneys. Replies krijgen van robots. Kortom: push berichten of events die, helaas, iherent zijn aan het systeem.
Twitter doet zijn best om deze geautomatiseerde spam tegen te gaan. Minder dan 1% van de berichten is spam, dat is zeer acceptabel.

Over ongewenste berichten van gebruikers heb ik het niet. Die kunnen irritant worden, maar je kunt ze ook uit zetten.

Wat zegt Twitter er zelf van?

Ze brengen het nieuws voorzichtig:

Promoted Tweets must meet a higher bar—they must resonate with users. That means if users don’t interact with a Promoted Tweet to allow us to know that the Promoted Tweet is resonating with them, such as replying to it, favoriting it, or Retweeting it, the Promoted Tweet will disappear.

Kortom: we drukken het in de neuzen van onze gebruikers en als die het niet leuk vinden, halen we het weg. Oppervlakkig gezien lijkt dat nobel, maar het is mijns inziens een stap achteruit in de tijd.

Impressed by the Twitter Remote widget from the Twittercounter people, I have written a WordPress plugin to make life a little easier for my fellow WordPress users: you can fill in your preferences and use the widget as a regular WordPress widget.

Here’s how it works:

1. Download the .zip file
2. unpack the .zip file in your plugins directory
3. In the admin section of your blog, activate the plugin
4. In the “Appearance” menu, choose “Widgets”
5. Activate the twitter remote widget
6. Fill in the form you see on the left
7. Click “done” and save your changes
8. Report your succes or failure in the comments below.
